NICOLA LEYLAND
A freak accident: Homeschooling as a path toward empowerment
In 2013, my son (then 8 years old) had an accident resulting in a brain injury. After a stilted return to school, he had a psychological breakdown. My pleas for help during this incredibly difficult time went unheard. Devastated, angry and overwhelmed, I removed my son in September 2014 and home educated him for the next 7 years. This was a painful but ultimately positive and successful endeavour. I will discuss how it is important to trust the child, to lower stress and demands to a level the child can cope with, to tune into your own intuition, and to be careful who you listen to.
