Keeping the parents outside the school gates

In this talk, I will raise the suggestion that our schooling system is designed to exclude parents and carers from their children’s education. I will encourage us to reflect on whether this design choice was made in support of our children’s education or for other economic or political ends.

Bio

Dr. Carmel Kent is a Lecturer at the Institute of Educational Technology (IET), the Open University, UK. Carmel’s research focus is on parents’ involvement in children’s education, online learning communities, interactivity and social learning, on using computational methods for learning analytics, and on ethical AI for educational applications.
