ORACY MADE EASY
Ancient rhetoric and effective classroom talk
A one-day workshop for school leaders and classroom teachers
Teachers wishing to develop their pupils’ oracy skills are faced with two main challenges:
- How can I help my pupils learn to speak and listen effectively with each another?
- How can I help my pupils learn to speak with confidence from the front of the room?
In this practical one-day workshop for school leaders and classroom teachers, you will learn a range of practical strategies for helping your pupils significantly improve their ability to a) speak and listen effectively with one another; and b) deliver a knockout presentation.
In the morning, you will learn a range of rhetorical techniques, tried and tested through the ages by history’s movers and shakers, for delivering a knockout talk. You will then write and perform a speech using these techniques to a group of your peers. Not only does learning about rhetoric help your pupils get better at persuasive speaking and writing – it also helps them learn to read the world with a more critical eye.
In the afternoon, you will learn about how to promote effective group talk among pupils. In this practical session, you will learn how to create and embed the use “discussion guidelines” to boost the learning of all pupils through effective speaking and listening skills. This method enables teachers to transform the quality of group interactions within the space of a single lesson, and is an essential part of any teacher’s toolkit.
If you want to invest in your pupils’ future by helping them develop and embed high standards of presentational and group talk, this one-day workshop is the gift that will keep on giving!
